Umayyad Mosque

     This is the courtyard inside the Grand Mosque of Damascus.  It is one of the largest, oldest, and most holiest mosques in the world.

Umayyad Mosque II

     The mosque has a shrine which is said to contain the head of John the Baptist who is honored as a prophet by both Muslims and Christians.

Silk Dealer

     Just south of Umayyad Mosque is the Damascus Souq.  Here one can find anything from silk to pistachio nut covered ice cream, a popular Syrian treat.

The Souq

     This is the main avenue of the souq.  Although difficult to see in this photo notice the arched roof.
