Antarctica

Iceberg Cruising

I believe the best part of any visit to Antarctica is the zodiac cruises. Floating between and around the massive blocks of ice is breathtaking to say the least. Remember ninety percent of any iceberg is submerged. Occasionally I heard the thunderous crack and rumble of a berg breaking and if I was lucky I would see it roll in the water shifting its weight. Sometimes I would see a leopard seal lurking just beneath the surface and hiding near ice looking for a penguin dinner.

Say Ahh!

This giant one ton elephant seal raised his head and opened his mouth wide for my camera. I don't know if he was saying "cheese" or trying to scare me away. The seals pull themselves on land with their flippers and as their chests raised and lowered against the ground their bodies sounded like red rubber gym balls bouncing up and down.

Gentoo Penguin

I visited several gentoo penguin colonies during my stay. They are easily identified by an orange stripe on their beaks.

Ice Arch

Another of the many incredible sights discovered while iceberg cruising.

Seal Eyes

This weddel seal almost seemed to smile for me. Missing arms and legs these animals look so helpless on land.

Beach Stroll

Another gentoo penguin takes a walk along the shore. Living in colonies all the penguins are very dirty but when they emerge from the ocean after a swim they are shiny and clean.

Blue Ice

This picture is another reason why the zodiac cruises were my favorite moments in Antarctica.

Elephant Seal Slumber

Laying amongst the rocks this seal was enjoying Antarctica's spring weather.

Chinstrap Penguin

This species of penguin are called chinstrap penguins for obvious reasons. None of the penguins I visited were much taller than my knee. They could not be cuter as they awkwardly waddled along on land.

Strike a Pose

Another gentoo stretches his wings and neck as it enjoys the day.
